Objective

This guide installs DataLad in your /home on Hedy, in about fifteen minutes.
What will be installed (in an isolated folder, ~/miniforge3):

  • Miniforge: the conda software manager.
  • A datalad environment containing Python 3.12, DataLad 1.6.5 and git-annex 10.20260717.

Prerequisites

3 GB free in your /home.

Installation

Log in to the login node from your machine:

ssh -p 8822 <votre_login>@hedy.mesocentre.univ-amu.fr

Copy and paste this entire block into the login node terminal. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

cd ~ && \
VERSION=26.7.2-0 && \
FILE=Miniforge3-${VERSION}-Linux-x86_64.sh && \
wget https://github.com/conda-
forge/miniforge/releases/download/${VERSION}/${FILE} && \
echo "281b0ac7d550802efc81af633225a5e6116d29ae72f3ab4eae7168c3931a4c05
${FILE}" | sha256sum -c && \
bash ${FILE} –b -p $HOME/miniforge3 && \
source $HOME/miniforge3/bin/activate && \
conda create -n datalad -c conda-forge python=3.12 datalad=1.6.5 git-
annex=10.20260717 -y && \
conda activate datalad && \
datalad --version && \
git annex version | head -1 && \
rm -f ~/${FILE}

What each step does:

  1. wget downloads the Miniforge installer (about 120 MB).
  2. sha256sum -c checks that the file is intact. If the line does not display OK, everything stops and nothing is installed.
  3. bash … -b -p installs Miniforge in ~/miniforge3.
  4. conda create creates the datalad environment with the exact versions. This is the longest step.
  5. The two version commands should display datalad 1.6.5 and git-annex version: 10.20260717….
  6. rm -f deletes the installer, which is no longer needed.

Check

Two tests confirm that the installation works: one on the login node and one on a compute node. Each should display ok lines.
On the login node

cd /tmp && \
datalad create test-dl && \
cd test-dl && \
dd if=/dev/urandom of=gros.bin bs=1M count=5 && \
datalad save -m "test" && \
git annex whereis gros.bin && \
cd ~ && chmod -R u+w /tmp/test-dl && rm -rf /tmp/test-dl

Daily use

Each time you log in, two lines activate DataLad:

source ~/miniforge3/bin/activate
conda activate datalad

The (datalad) prefix then appears in front of your command prompt. To exit it:

conda deactivate.

Uninstall

Everything is contained in a few locations in your /home. First check what exists:

ls -d ~/miniforge3 ~/.conda ~/.condarc 2>/dev/null

Then delete:

rm -rf ~/miniforge3 ~/.conda ~/.condarc

rm -rf does not ask for confirmation and does not go through a trash bin: reread the command before running it. Your DataLad datasets are not affected; only the software is removed.
